RUGGEDMAN, MODE 9 IN FRESH WAR

Both rappers continue to deny they’re hating on each other. But few weeks after they sat together and even exchanged compliments at a magazine autograph signing session in Lagos, there are fresh indications that the Lagos-based rappers are bringing beef back.

 

While opinions continue to be divided over who is a better rapper, between Rugged and 9, both rappers are rapidly losing rating points, appearing to be fading away while young emcees like M.I., Naeto C and Gino prepare to take the stage.

 

So it is not surprising that the feuding rappers are covertly but cleverly using beef tracks to get our attention again.

On a fresh cut featuring Banky W, Mode 9, a profound lyricist who usually shies away from battling on wax, appeared to be throwing punches at Ruggedman – the controversial rapper also known as Ruggedy Baba.

On the song ‘talking to you’, Modey spits: ‘’look jester, you’re deluded. You’re not king/you’re not that funny guy who does cart wheels in front of him… make a wrong move and get a pummelling/ my fangs spreading like a pandemic breakout…’’

 

He goes on, filling each line with lethal braggadocio, and making no direct or indirect mention of Ruggedman. Until the last bar: ‘‘hear the sweetest part/ this baba, that baba. You’re not a father/ you gat intellect myopia/ so when I dis a baba/ it’s not Ethiopia…’’

 

Ruggedman is the only rapper with a baba to his name.

 

Mode 9 insists however, that he ‘‘wasn’t’’ referring to Rugged on the battle track.

 

But just when Rugged is making public, his plans to retire after his forthcoming album, Mode 9 spits on talking to you : ‘‘Quit rap/ here’s your pension paper/ your heart’s so weak so deal with the tension later…’’

 

And Rugged, who dissed his way to fame in year 2000 (on the acidic Ehen Pt 1 where he took Eedris Abdulkareem, Black Reverendz, Rasqui and Maintain to the cleaners) is not letting it go without a fight. The rapper’s upcoming single titled ‘Banging’ is believed to contain venoms targeted at Mode 9.

Currently away in the UK, the rapper is expected to release the song upon his return next week.
